What is Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a new requirement for travelers entering the United Kingdom, including Scotland. From the end of 2024, all EU travelers who can enter the country without a visa will need this electronic authorization. The ETA is digitally linked to your passport and allows you entry into the country.
Who needs an ETA?
- Tourists visiting the UK for up to 6 months
- People visiting friends or family
- Business travelers and students on short-term stays
- Creative workers traveling on a Creative Worker Visa (up to 3 months)
- Travelers passing through UK airports (even without crossing border control)
Who doesn’t need an ETA?
- British or Irish passport holders
- People with permission to live, work, or study in the UK
- Holders of a valid visa for entering the United Kingdom

How to apply for an ETA?
- Download the UK ETA app or visit the official GOV.UK website
- Complete the application for each traveler (including children)
- Pay the fee of £10 per person
- Wait for approval (usually within 3 working days)
Important: Apply for the ETA at least 3 days before your planned trip.
ETA Validity
The ETA is valid for 2 years and allows multiple trips to the United Kingdom. However, its validity is tied to the validity of your passport.
