Today, more than 1,000 school building improvement initiatives will gain approval as part of a plan to enhance the school estate’s condition.

A total of 859 academies, sixth-form colleges, and voluntary-aided schools across all regions will receive a portion of a £456 million fund aimed at renovating and repairing educational facilities.

The condition improvement funding aims to ensure that students learn in safe, warm, and energy-efficient classrooms.

In total, the government has committed £1.8 billion in capital funding for the financial year 2023 to 2024, which includes £1.1 billion for local authorities, large multi-academy trusts, and voluntary-aided bodies, as announced in March.

Baroness Diana Barran MBE, Minister for the School System, stated:

Our Condition Improvement Fund has successfully completed over 11,000 projects, significantly impacting pupils and teachers nationwide. These initiatives help foster safer learning environments that enhance educational quality.

It’s vital that every school has access to top-notch learning facilities, and these funding decisions will enable accountable bodies to plan and initiate projects for replacing roofs, boilers, and windows—a step that allows students and teachers to thrive in comfortable settings.

Since 2015, the department has allocated over £15 billion to uphold the government’s priority for schools, ensuring they have safe and well-maintained facilities necessary for high-quality education.

This announcement follows confirmation of 239 new school buildings in December as part of the Schools Rebuilding Programme, with 400 out of 500 schools and sixth-form colleges already selected for rebuilding under the decade-long initiative.
