Thank you, Mr. President. Our meeting today has been prompted by Russia’s seventeenth veto concerning Syria. Time and again, Russia has employed their veto to block humanitarian access for the people of north-west Syria and to impede accountability for violence against civilians. This instance of the veto is particularly harsh. The UN has been unequivocal about what is necessary to secure humanitarian access for the 4.6 million people in north-west Syria: consistent, predictable access, adhering to international humanitarian law, for a minimum of 12 months. Fourteen Council members were prepared to support a resolution mandating that access. Fourteen members entered negotiations in good faith, consistently compromising to seek common ground. …

Visa Requirement Implementation for Honduran Citizens Traveling to the UK

The decision to implement a visa regime has been taken due to the notable and ongoing rise since 2017 in the number of UK asylum applications by Honduran nationals at the UK border. Many have exploited the provision for visiting the UK as non-visa nationals for a limited period. In 2017, there were 9 asylum applications from Hondurans. This increased to 789 in 2022 and 275 in the first quarter of 2023. The new rules come into immediate effect for all Honduran travelers to the UK.
