Năm mới ở Anh 2026-2027: Pháo hoa & Hogmanay

New Year in the UK peaks in two places: London’s ticketed fireworks over the Thames and Edinburgh’s three-day Hogmanay. London’s display is ticket-only (in 2025, £40–£55 for visitors, £20–£35 for London residents) and sells out fast. Edinburgh throws a street party with a torchlight procession and a midnight singalong. Both need warm clothing, a £20 UK ETA, and early planning.

TL;DR: For New Year in London, buy fireworks tickets when they go on sale on Ticketmaster (usually from mid-October) — you cannot simply turn up on the Embankment. The Hogmanay festival runs 29 December to 1 January with a torchlight march, street party and the Loony Dook swim. Scotland takes two bank holidays: 1 January and, in 2027, Monday 4 January (in lieu of 2 January). Dress for 2–8°C and book beds early.

Know these before you book:

  • London’s midnight fireworks are ticket-only (2025: £40–£55, or £20–£35 for London residents), with about 100,000 tickets (London.gov.uk).
  • The Edinburgh festival is one of the world’s largest New Year events (the official Hogmanay festival).
  • 1 January is a UK-wide bank holiday; Scotland adds a second day (2 January, moved to Monday 4 January in 2027) (GOV.UK bank holidays).
  • Transport for London adjusts services on the night, sometimes with free travel windows (TfL).
  • A £20 UK ETA is required for visa-free visitors (GOV.UK ETA).

New Year in London: fireworks on the Thames

London’s 31 December display launches from the London Eye and barges on the river, timed to Big Ben’s midnight chimes. It is ticketed, and that surprises many first-timers. Tickets go on sale on Ticketmaster, usually in mid-October with a smaller second batch later in the autumn; in 2025 they cost £40–£55 (London residents £20–£35) and sold out. Without one you will be turned away from the viewing areas along the Embankment and the South Bank.

No ticket? You still have options. Primrose Hill, Alexandra Palace and Greenwich Park give distant skyline views for free, though they fill early and the fireworks look small from there. Many hotels and Thames cruises sell dinner packages with a river view. Whatever you choose, plan your route home first — our getting around London guide covers the night’s transport. The Underground runs a special all-night service on 31 December, and in past years Transport for London has made travel free for a window after 23:45. Roads around Westminster close from early evening, so walking or the Tube beats any taxi. Screenshot your route before the signal drops in the crush.

Hogmanay: Scotland’s New Year explained

Hogmanay is Scotland’s New Year, and it dwarfs a single evening. The festival opens on 29 December with a torchlight procession, thousands carrying flames from the Meadows through the Old Town. The night itself brings the main street party: live bands, a ceilidh, and fireworks bursting over the castle at midnight while crowds sing Auld Lang Syne.

Mẹo hữu ích: The Edinburgh street party is ticketed and fenced. Buy your wristband in advance from the official Hogmanay site; the city centre is sealed off, so wandering in on the night is not an option.

Traditions run deep here. First-footing — being the first to cross a friend’s threshold after midnight, bearing coal, shortbread or whisky — is meant to bring luck. On 1 January the brave take the Loony Dook, a freezing dip in the Firth of Forth at South Queensferry, now a free community-run event. Our Hướng dẫn du lịch Edinburgh maps the venues, and Khám phá Scotland lists events beyond the capital.

Beyond London and Edinburgh

Other cities do their own thing. Cardiff runs Calennig, a free waterfront party with fireworks over Cardiff Bay. Newcastle and Manchester light up their quaysides and squares. In the countryside, Stonehaven near Aberdeen swings blazing fireballs through the streets in a centuries-old ritual. London and Edinburgh grab the headlines, but a smaller city can mean cheaper beds and shorter queues.

Consider a couple flying from New York for the London fireworks. They buy two tickets the day the first batch goes on sale in October and book a hotel near Waterloo the same week. When December arrives, the hard part is done — they just pack thermals. Our Hướng dẫn về các thành phố tốt nhất tại Vương quốc Anh helps anyone weighing an alternative host city.

New Year’s Day and the days after

The celebration does not stop at midnight. On 1 January, London stages its New Year’s Day Parade, one of the world’s largest, with more than 8,000 performers marching from Piccadilly to Whitehall. Watching from the pavement is free; grandstand seats are sold separately if you want a guaranteed view (£75 for the 2026 parade). Marching bands, cheerleaders and vintage buses fill two miles of route from 1pm.

In Scotland, the Loony Dook draws swimmers into the icy Firth of Forth on New Year’s Day (the community organisers announce the time each year), half of them in fancy dress. Museums, galleries and big attractions mostly reopen on 2 January; in Scotland the second bank holiday falls on Monday 4 January in 2027. If the crowds have worn you out, slip out of the city — our London day trips guide points to quiet castles and coast an hour away. Many first-timers underestimate how flat a British 1 January feels: shops shut, streets empty, and the country nurses its head until the 2nd.

How to plan a UK New Year trip

New Year sells out faster than any other British date, so order matters.

  1. Apply for your Thời gian ước tính đến (ETA) tại Vương quốc Anh early — weeks ahead, not on 31 December.
  2. Book the headline event: London tickets as soon as the October release opens, Edinburgh Street Party tickets (early-bird releases usually come out in spring or summer) as early as you can.
  3. Reserve a bed near the action as early as you can; December rates climb fast in our accommodation guide.
  4. Kiểm tra Met Office forecast and pack thermals, waterproofs and grippy boots.

Remember the bank holidays. With 1 January closed nationwide and a second Scottish bank holiday (Monday 4 January in 2027), shops and some transport run reduced hours. Keep cash handy for the odd stall or taxi — our Hướng dẫn về tiền tệ và tiền boa tại Vương quốc Anh explains the balance of notes and contactless.

Weather, safety and your UK ETA

Standing outside at midnight in a British winter is cold work. Temperatures hover between 2°C and 8°C, wind chill bites by the river, and rain is a fair bet. Thermal layers, a waterproof coat and boots with grip matter more than any outfit. Our Hướng dẫn về thời tiết và chuẩn bị hành lý tại Anh spells out the kit, and a hip flask of hot tea beats a soggy queue.

Crowds are large but well managed. Follow steward directions, agree a meeting point with your group in case phones fail, and never climb barriers. Once the fireworks end, walking a few streets before catching a train saves a long crush at the nearest station. For a quieter start to the year, our London day trips guide suggests a New Year’s Day escape.

Do not overlook the paperwork. Since 8 April 2026 the UK ETA costs £20, lasts two years and permits stays up to six months, so one authorisation covers the whole festive break. Children need their own. We are an independent assistance service, not a government body; you can apply directly on GOV.UK for £20, or let us check and submit your application for you.
